TO MAKE SPECIAL LETTERS: Click the little keyboard icon next to the space to type in. Click the Alt key to make it glow dark blue. Minimize it, or move/drag it out of the way. Now when you type in the box, you can just hold Ctrl and then type the vowel, n, etc. over which you need the special mark.
